WATCHING YOU WATCHING ME
CULTURAL AND CREATIVE EXCHANGE THROUGH IMAGES
A student exchange project between D.E.S.T.A. for AFRICA ADDIS ABABA and NEUE SCHULE FÜR FOTOGRAFIE BERLIN, initiated by Aida Muluneh and Eva Maria Ocherbauer.

"Watching You Watching Me" is a student exchange project organized by two schools for photography, D.E.S.T.A. for Africa, Addis Ababa, and Neue Schule für Fotografie (New School for Photography), Berlin. Five students of each school are given the chance to get to know the other country, respectively, and to capture their impressions photographically. With the camera in hand, they will be able to overcome any fears of contact, to make valuable new acquaintances, to question their cultural influences and to develop new perspectives of their own.
The results of this sustained learning process will be presented to the public in an exhibition: a new perspective on Africa and Europe, as seen by the foreigners, respectively, reflecting the countries’ true character far from popular stereotypes.

In March 2010, five students of the Neue Schule für Fotografie Berlin travelled to Addis Ababa, accompanied by their professor Eva Maria Ocherbauer. For three exciting weeks, they enjoyed the warm hospitality of their Ethiopian partners, establishing new friendships and working hard on their intended photographic projects, based on an analysis of the differences, the interferences and the common ground found comparing both cultures. Among other excursions, the participants also visited the Goethe-Institut in Addis Ababa and the German ambassador in order to present their project and the two schools for photography.
The African students on their part will visit Berlin with the same approach in June 2010.
On 17 June 2010, the project will be presented to the public at the ifa gallery in Berlin. Aida Muluneh, the Ethiopian students and the participants from Berlin will be present.
The exhibition will be put on display in the showroom at Neue Schule für Fotografie in November 2010 as a part of the official programme of the “Month of Photography“, and will then move to the Addis Ababa International Photography Festival in December. .
