There are many ways to find out about the human species. One of them could be to look closely at their relationship with the other remaining creatures on Earth: Animals crop up in many places, alone or in groups. They live far apart, alongside or with people. They can be partners as pets, enemies as parasites or toys as people's teddy bears.
As farm animals, they provide mankind with food, clothing, ornaments, and cosmetics. On cartons of milk, cows grazing in green fields suggest they are kept in a manner far removed from reality. 98% of meat produced in Germany comes from mass farming systems, and many zoo and circus animals barely exist anymore in the wild.
What relationship do man and animal have to each other? Was connects or separates us? What do we learn about ourselves, whilst observing animals?
These are amongst many questions delved into by Eva Bertram and Marc Volk's students from the first second and third years at Berlin's Neue Schule für Fotografie. The result is a striking exhibition on Animals as a theme.

A selection of the images taken by students will be on display as of
24 February 2012 in the Exhibition Tiere at the Neue Schule für Fotografie's Gallery in Berlin.
