Magnum In Motion
Workshop with Adrian Kelterborn,

Magnum Photos is a photographic news agency created in 1947, and has maintained a stature of journalism unlike any other in the world. Magnum regularly delivers reportages in U.S. and European magazines including Time, Newsweek, Paris Match, National Geographic, GEO, and Stern. Photographs of Magnum photographers are also collected by some of the world’s most established museums amongst them the MoMA, in New York City, the Tate Modern in London or the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris.
Founded in New York, in 2004, Magnum In Motion (MIM) is the multimedia digital studio of Magnum Photos. MIM assembles visual narratives for online and offline platforms, including screenings in museums, festivals, and workshops.

The workshop at the Neue Schule für Fotografie Berlin from October 25 to October 29, 2010 will give insight into the history and modus operandi of Magnum In Motion, it will provide detailed analysis and background information of MIM essays. The workshop aims at making the participants familiar with the basic techniques of multimedia production and it will help them to get their own multimedia photo-essays ready for presentation. The workshop addresses professional photographers looking for new ways of distributing their pictures, picture editors as well as emerging photographers in the field of journalism and (media-)art.
Workshop structure
Day 1: presentation of Magnum In Motion and analysis of selected MIMs in groups
Day 2: conceptualization of personal essay, presentation of idea, feedback, collecting assets (stills, audio, video), preparing assets for editing
Day 3: editing of multimedia essay, personal mentoring and consultation
Day 4: editing of multimedia essay, exporting and maybe online publication
Day 5: presentation of personal essay and final critique, puplic exhibition during an event in the evening as part of the „European Month of Photography Berlin“
Location: Neue Schule für Fotografie, Brunnenstr. 188 - 190, 10119 Berlin
Duration: October 25 to October 29, 2010, 10a.m. – 18 p.m.
Price: 600€
Language of instruction: German / English
Attendance is limited to 15 participants (minimum required 9)
Scope of supply and services: During the workshop, participants will have access to the Neue Schule’s digital studio where they will find a scanner and several work stations featuring basic editing programs.
Technical requirements: The essays’ source material are digital data. Thus, the workshop’s participants should have a digital camera, digital images or ready to scan images at their disposal respectively. They should also be equipped to record audio material either using a simple consumer video cam or an audio recording device like Edirol. Alternatively, online archive audio footage could be used.
