Finding Your Subject:
The Fine Art Portrait vs The Fashion Portrait

The purpose of this workshop is to explore the essential relevance and power of choosing the subject for portrait and fashion photography. Just will present his personal approach to finding his subjects. The relationships between the fine art portrait and the personal fashion photograph will be deconstructed, using the subject, and the photographer’s relation to it, as a guiding tool and principle. Each student will be asked to define and analyze a subject of their choosing, and then produce a short series of portrait or fashion photographs based upon this process.

Day One: Presentation and Analysis
Just will give a lecture accompanied by a slide show to illustrate the principles outlined above. He will then discuss each participant's ideas with them and help develop their understanding of the process and how to produce their intended series.

Day Two: Pre Production
Students will plan and set in motion the individual elements of their series.
This will include: selection of models, arranging locations or studio space, talking with stylists, hair and make up artists, pre-visualising and planning lighting to achieve the intended feel of the images. Students may begin shooting if they are ready.

There will be Models, Hair & Make Up Artists, and a collection from Neppl - SURGERY TO WEAR for the shooting.


Day Three: Shooting and Processing - Part 1
All students will shoot their subjects on this day. Studio and locations to be pre-arranged. Models, Hair & Make Up Artists will support the production. Just will be available to discuss the process and method with each student.

Shoot: "Berlin Style"


Day Four: Shooting and Processing - Part 2
Students will be finished with the shooting of the fist day and focus on the second tropic. As on the previous day, Models, Hair & Make Up Artists will support the production. Just will also be available to discuss the process and method with each student.

Fashion shoot: "Glamour Style"


Day Five: Presentation Day
All students will present their series to the group. Just will meet again individually with each student to discuss the results of the shooting.

Just Loomis, a former assistant and friend of Helmut Newton, and reknowned fashion photographer in Europe and U.S.A., worked in the 80s for mainstream magazines such as Harper's Bazaar and the New York Times Magazine. Since then he has mainly focused on his own work, including still life, nudes and documentary portraits, in which he is more the observer than the creator: “I am searching for something honest about my subjects...” (Just Loomis). In 2009 alongside two other former assistents of Helmut Newton, his work under the title of “Three Boys from Pasadena” was exhibited at the Berlin Museum of Photography (Newton Foundation).

Services: Participants will be given access to the computer room and printers at the Neue Schule for the duration of the workshop.
Equipment: Please bring a digital camera and storage media. This course is for advanced photographers with good knowledge of their own equipment.
