The agency Magnum Photos was established in 1947 and has maintained its unique position in quality photojournalism ever since. Founded in New York in 2004, Magnum In Motion (MIM) is the digital multimedia studio of Magnum Photos. MIM assembles visual narratives for online and offline platforms, including screenings at museums, festivals, and workshops.

The workshop held at the Neue Schule für Fotografie, Berlin, from 2nd to 6th November 2009, provided an insight into the history and modus operandi of Magnum In Motion as well as detailed analyses and background information on MIM essays. The workshop was aimed at making the participants familiar with the basic techniques of multimedia production and to give them the opportunity to produce a multimedia photo-essay of their own. The group of 15 participants included picture editors as well as emerging photographers in the field of journalism and (media) art and professional photographers looking for new ways of distributing their pictures.

On the first day, selected MIM essays were presented and their characteristics discussed. After a short introduction to the cutting tool Final Cut Pro, the participants focused on their own essays on the second day. Most of them had already prepared a project description and brought their own images, others started their search for visual and audio and material during the workshop. The following days were spent producing and editing their personal essays. Adrian Kelterborn, who held the workshop, accompanied the participants during this process, adapting easily to their different wishes and needs.

The 17 multimedia essays produced show a wide range of different aesthetics and intentions. They all convey the enormous enthusiasm of their creators as well as Adrian Kelterborn’s professional approach. Moreover, the composition of the group, being partly formed by people who create pictures and partly by people who work with them professionally, lead to very prolific discussions with complementing perspectives and opinions.
