Photographer Olaf Martens is working for many international fashion and lifestyle magazines. Five students of the Neue Schule für Fotografie were invited to a shooting exclusively organised for the Spanish paper El País, in order to watch and ask questions. The shooting took place in the Bogota hotel on Kurfürstendamm in Berlin. Availing himself of three models, Olaf Martens staged a short story about the visit of three very special hotel guests.

The students were amazed at the photographer´s approach to lighting and his composition of the images, which proved to be very complex, but produced simple-looking and playful results in the end. The Workshop complemented the practical lessons at Neue Schule für Fotografie and offered a valuable insight into how a professional photographer actually works, combining a profound technical knowledge and creative imagination. It was the latter that especially impressed the students: Olaf Martens didn´t have to try out any of his compositions. From the postures to the light, the images had already existed in the photographer’s mind and just had to be staged and fixed on film.
Since the students perceived the visit as a great gain, Olaf Martens will offer another workshop this year, discussing the multiple possibilities of how to handle light in photographic productions.
