Just Loomis, Skater, Los Angeles 2005

Just Loomis, former assistant and friend of Helmut Newton, renowned in Europe and the US for his fashion photography, used to work for top magazines like Harper's Bazaar and The New York Times Magazine in the 1980s. Meanwhile, he is mainly pursuing his own artistic goals in the areas of still life, nude and portrait photography, observing rather than composing: “I am searching for something honest about my subjects... (Just Loomis).“ In 2009, he showed some of his works at the Berlin Museum for Photography (Newton Foundation) in a shared exhibition with two further assistants of Helmut Newton, titled Three Boys from Pasadena.

On this occasion, the Neue Schule für Fotografie invited Just Loomis for a two-day workshop with the students.

On the first day, Just Loomis described his work with Helmut Newton and talked about the typical workflows in the editorial offices of big magazines. He presented his own photographs, including some original prints, and explained the students how to do a professional presentation of their pictures. Then he discussed the students´ works and gave them feedback and recommendations on how to further hone their skills.

For the second day, Just Loomis had arranged to do some practical exercises with the students. He took them out and told them to take pictures of strangers after having asked for permission. The workshop ended with a brief presentation and feedback regarding the photographs taken. The students were happy to have spent two intense days gathering inspiration for their further development.
